Progress across the board in remote housing program
June 2020 marks the end of the third year of the Northern Territory Government’s remote housing investment package Our Community. Our Future. Our Homes.
Remote housing program progress.
Three years in, achievements can be seen across all areas of the program:
- $66.7 million in contracts awarded to Aboriginal business enterprises, representing 50% of all contracts awarded across the life of the program.
- An average of 49.6% Aboriginal employment across the programs, meaning Aboriginal people across the NT have had employment and training opportunities.
- 90 new and replacement homes built, with a further 208 under construction.
- 222 existing homes extended under Room to Breathe, creating an additional 392 living spaces, to reduce the impacts of overcrowding and increase the liveability of existing homes.
- Preventative repairs and maintenance programs commenced in Kalkarindji and Lajamanu.
- 22 new government employee houses completed with another 4 under construction.
Local decision making is a key principle of the program. To date, 442 visits across nearly all of the Northern Territory’s remote communities have been made to seek feedback and input from community decision makers into the program.
Local decision making is seeing positive results in communities:
- In Barunga, two duplexes are being built for senior women who want to live near each other for support and no longer want the responsibility of large houses, meaning these larger houses can be freed up for young families.
- In Gapuwiyak, houses are being built facing the football oval to provide a prime view of games.
- In Wadeye, Thamurrur Development Corporation has created its own engagement tools to explain the program to community and advised the department of a preferred area for subdivisions.
- Also in Wadeye, virtual engagement sessions were successfully trialled during the COVID-19 shutdown. 3D house models were displayed on a projector for community members to discuss.
- In Pirlangimpi, the Housing Reference Group agreed in principle to new housing however requested the department return and present the decisions to the broader community at their monthly community meeting. This allowed for the broader community to have a say and ask questions
directly to the program team.
- In Maningrida, the decision making group wanted to discuss some of the proposed new builds with family. So key team members stayed in community and the meeting reconvened the following day to continue
